John Porter, an early settler, set aside Block 8 of the Village of Wacoma for the use of the residents as a Public Square, in the tradition of the New England village green or common. It remains a public park today and is maintained by the Town of Porter. The adjacent schoolhouse (the Cooksville Community Center) is available for rent to the public and serves as a unique and charming setting for activities such as family reunions, weddings, dinner parties and showers.
